Get him a trip somewhere or tickets to an event he would love. If you get a trip you have from now until the time you go to come up with the money.
Please get something else then that T-shirt!

Think about the past few weeks or months and see if anything comes to mind on any comments he made. I remember an ex-g/f of mine heard me say how old and worn out my cigar cutter and humidor was and 3 months later that's what I got for Xmas. It was such an AwEsoMe gift because I knew she was really paying attention to what I really wanted. Men like practical gifts we can use so while a cool statue of my favor athlete might look "cool" I can't use it.
If that doesn't work start asking him indirect questions or engage him in conversation over the next few days and really pay attention to his answers. Here's a great tip:
Take him window shopping and use all your will power to keep from asking him "would you like that?". Don't do it!
Let it come out naturally. Even just spending a couple of hours at a mall or someplace similar will give you tons of ideas on what to get him. Just pay really close attention to what he fawns over or what kinds of comments he makes such as "ah man that would be so cool!" or "that would look great on me", etc.
Does he have any hobbies? Can he use anything new to augment in his hobbies?
I'm sure you'll get him something special.

Try getting him some cologne, jacket, outfits, jewelry, games for the system he's got( if he plays that). Take him to a nice dinner, make him a card. I am sure anything you get him he will love, its the thought that counts. Good luck Sweetie.

hmm get him something he likes like a sport stuff he plays or if he is into systems like ps2 get him a neintendo wii for 250 dollars.... or ps3 for 600 bucks LOL i wouldnt get the 600bucker... or a nice watch or good moooooooooooooooooooooovies u2 like to watch good luck.
