here is the interpetation of ur verse:

Say, O Muhammad (s), to them: Clear proofs have come to you from your Lord; whoever perceives, them and believes, then it is for his own good, that he has perceived [them], since the reward resulting from his perception will be his; and whoever is blind, to them and goes astray, then it, the evil consequence of his being astray, will be to his own hurt. And I am not a keeper, a watcher, over you, of your deeds: I am but a warner.

it is directed to the prophet and not god.

"Proofs have come unto you from your Lord, so whoso seeth, it is for his own good, and whoso is blind is blind to his own hurt. And I am not a keeper over you."

Explanation given by Pooya/M.A. Ali is thus:
"There is no compulsion in religion (Surah al Baqarah 2:256). Islam has given complete freedom of thought and action to man so that he may use his intellect and reason and follow the right course, shown by the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him. If a person wanders in the wilderness of ignorance and superstition he shall surely come to a sad end."

I think that Allah, unlike Jesus, wanted to say "don't act like you are doing this for me or like I told you to do this - do what is right or hurt yourself, it's your choice and it is that simple".

Peace!

free will and personal responsibility. sound like familiar? god presents commands and lets us choose whether or not to follow them. sound familiar? if you don't believe god's words or follow the commandments you 'suffer the wrath of god'. now i know that sounds familiar to you!!!
