I great grandpa said he was there when they opened it. He said that they started from manhattan an dug to teh bottom. They they take pieces of the tube and lowered it on teh they river. and when they tube was done(1939), they pumped the water out and they started to tiles on the walls and that how it was made

Nowadays they have a borer machine which is as big as a building. The machine holds an area the size of a section of tunnel and bores into the earth. Workers follow behind and complete the walls.
