A boss of mine observed me staring into space and concluded I was sick. Could the problem have been I was smoking too much cannabis in the evenings? I got myself placed in one-on-one therapy where the counselor concluded that I have a thought disorder. He asked me official-sounding questions. Have I done something terrible for which I need to be punished? Do people take thoughts out of my head? Do people put thoughts in my head? Am I directed by forces external to me? In the end he gave me a book that is a group therapy guide to anxiety and panic. Twice he offered me actual group therapy but I declined. I have put much stock in the ideas contained in this book but I wonder if I am a fool for doing so. Am I emotionally disturbed because I have let my anger get the best of me? Could my parents have shamed me? These ideas are disgusting. I definitely need some ideas into what I should think. Might my counselor have been a burn out? Or was he doing a good job?

Well, if you aren't feeling anxious or panicky then it is a definite waste of time. By the way, smoking pot too much can cause people to have problems with anxiety, but you didn't say that you experienced that. It can also cause, in a chronic user, symptoms similar to paranoid schizophrenic.
Maybe what you need to see is a good therapist who is also licensed to treat chemical dependency. If a habit is affecting your job, it could be a problem.
Think for yourself. Any therapist that tries to do your thinking for you is a sick person. If a therapist suggests something for you, question them! Ask them why they recommend it for you. Talk to them about why you don't feel you need to be there IF that is how YOU feel.

You seem already aware that the problem could have been smoking too much cannabis. The question you may want to ask yourself is why you are smoking so much. You may want to find a therapist you feel more comfortable with. There are good, as in caring and well-educated/informed counselors and there are many bad, as in apathetic and inept counselors. Group therapy can also be very helpful. There are many different groups but not every group is a right for every person. Look around and don't give up until you find a counselor & group that meets your needs so you will learn for yourself the answers to the questions you have as only you can do this...no one else can. Try to remember that anger is a normal and healthy emotion. It sounds like you need to learn how to use your anger in a more constructive way. A good counselor and group will help you do this so you won't find yourself questioning your emotional stability. Good luck to you.

With all the help you received, are you still smoking pot? Because if you are, you probably missed anything of importance that the therapist was trying to get through to you. If you had a clear mind, and were honest with yourself and him, why NOT go to group therapy? On the other hand, there are some good therapists, and some not so good. Maybe you just didn't click. The bottom line is, though, it won't work as long as you are chemically impaired.

wow...I had the same thing....when I was 30 ys old , it started as a panic attack, and I never took care of it, and it turned into epilepsy.
Pls go to a neurologist a.s.a.p. and ask for an EEG (electroencefalogram).
YES, the problem could have started from the cannabis smoking. I hope you dont do it anylonger.
Now , your parents or anyone could be ashamed of you. Just be yourself. I have been going to therapist since my first seizure (staring into space).
Go to the library and get a book on the subject.
Hope you feel better. Good luck.

As a long term pot smoker, this could be the cause of your problems as I have experienced such lapses in concentration. I am not smoking anymore because I got sick and tired of being sick and tired, but it is an every day struggle not to smoke, and escape into the velvet fog of being stoned. You may want to ask yourself why you feel the need to escape from reality, but number one is to stop beating yourself up and start validating yourself as a person that you have a right to be, despite what other people say or think, as only your opinion of you matters, not those of others. Also, it is not foolish to question yourself, as this is one of the ways that we look in, but do so in a warm and supporting manner, and love yourself as you deserve it!
