Stop whatever exercise that is causing them. Make sure your shoes are in good shape with good arch support - bad shoes are the most likely cause. You may need to change the surface you run or jog on. Stretching and strengthening the calf muscles can help prevent the injury from returning.

The main treatment is rest. These links will give you more information. I hope you are feeling better soon.

If this is a recurrent problem you may benefit from having a consultation with a Physical Therapist in your area. Often time shin splints are brought on by poor or abnormal running mechanics, improper shoe wear or other biomechanical problems. An orthopedic Physical Therapist would be able to examine you and determine what is causing the shin splints and then address the problem.

Jacob and Lawrence in their book The Miracle of MSM give a case where a heptathlete took MSM supplement and got significant relief from her shin splints. Since it is non toxic and inexpensive, try 1-4 grams a day on an empty stomach (unless it makes you quesey). It is helpful for all kinds of arthritis and other inflammatory condtions.
It may take a while to start working so take it faithfully for at least a month before you give up on it.

After having gotten them multiple times, all i can say is extra stretching and rest. Take it easy for a week or two then see how they feel. Usually it is just the calves working too hard and the pain you feel is in the area of the shins.

I guess to answer your question I need to ask a question. how did you get shin splints ? was it from jogging or running ? if so you may need to change to walking or you could try jogging or running on grass. as that would be softer and cause less shock.

The only way to rid of them is rest. That could take several days to several weeks depending on the severity. Once healed, I suggest you purchase shoes which provide better support and absorption. Also try to run on softer ground such as grass and learn to "roll" your feet instead of landing a hard impact with your heels and foot.

your shoes maybe to worn, need to give them a rest and ice them, you also need to stretch the calf muscles which act as shock absorber for the shins if they are warmed up the shin takes the shock... also www. runnersworld.com has a lot of running and injury prevention tips

yeah i got them all the time...i run track

the best thing to do is get your shins taped before you go running. my school has a trainer so i just have the trainer do it for me.

but if you dont have access to a trainer then probably take a day off and just ice it.

I was told you had to rest and let them heal on their own.
