chocar is to crash but in spanish has two meanings:
you use it when you detest/dislike something
Me choca esa chica.
I detest that girl.
and of course chocar verb = to crash (against something)
The car crashed against the tree.
El coche chocó contra el árbol.
gustar (verb) is the opposite = to like something
I like to dance.
Me gusta bailar.
Neither chocar nor gustar are considered vulgar in Spain. They are perfect words.

I've only heard it as "crash". Where we would say "a wreck", you will hear "un choque". Slang varies from country to country, so some may have different meanings. For example, be careful of "coger'. Basic word some places, very crude in others.

I have said chocar with my profesora de espanol and she was fine with it. It means to crash.
The word I have been told to not use is coger in Latin American countries - it means to pick up in espana but has a sexual connotation in Lamerica

Chocar is like to crash and I've heard mexican people use it as to hate. Yea you can say Me choca for I hate. Me choca la musica banda.

It could have a bad connotation in spain and it is conjugater like the word "gustar" because it ends in "ar"
