Its an old proverb; here are some more that take it to another level.

The above is the Italian version of this old proverb. After doing a google search, my best bet is that that's where the English version of the saying originates.

And, coming from another over fifty year old person, I definitely agree with this proverb. Certainly, you don't usually get any other reward for virtue.

It has to be old. I remember hearing it when I was very young & I am an old lady now. Like over 50. I say that's old. ~;}
