My father is going to visti Vietnam next month. He went to a lawyer to get a passport and a visa. He told me that they needed my siblings and my socials. I believe that he is planning to bring back some 26 year old from there who he thinks wants to marry him. That is an issue all by it's self however I know that there is paper work involved for that, but still that doesn't even seem like it would require my info or my siblings. I am 28 and have worked hard to keep good credit and I need to know if this could be a scam.

Don't give your social security number to anyone for that purpose.

You are you. Your father is your father. Your life has nothing to do with his.

Talk to an immigration lawyer, but not the one your father is working with!

There could be a scam going on.

The way things are lately it doesn't surprise me. You are right to be suspicious though. I can tell you that lawyers are held to a higher standard than regular folks when it comes to fraud - therefore lawyers don't touch stuff like that. It may be now that INS wants to make sure your dad is legit before they issue a passport and if he has said he has children they want to make sure that they are legit too - (1) they exist and (2) no terrorist ties or felons or something like that. Your social is used by the govt to keep track of all kinds of things like that. Since 9/11 big brother has been a little frentic and some of the things they have been doing won't hold up in a court when challenged in the near future. I reccomend you call the lawyer and put him on notice that you don't feel comfortable with the request - why does he need it. If something goes wrong in the future you will at least know where to start your search and those of authorities - the lawyer.

I agree w/total garcia on this one...but have a burning question...why would your own father not know your ssn?...that makes no sense to me at all..he had to have it to file income tax returns etc....it makes no sense that he would not have it....
If he is a United States cit. he doesn't need to go to a lawyer to get a passport either...smells funny to me too. The only thing I can think of is that he is not a U.S. cit. and has to prove he has ties to the this country that insure he will come back...
Bottom line you don't trust your dad, and you at 28, must have your reasons, go w/ your gut girl...I have a feeling dad is not a legal in the U.S. w/o proving he has family here...
good luck...you are soooooooooooo right,,,the 26 yr. old is jsut another issue...probably someone else to get the state status....wow.

If you do not feel comfortable giving your ssn. Then don't. The only reason I would think, in the event something happens to your father ( maybe your father is doing a will/ life estate w/ this lawyer) while there; they would know how to disburse the funds, his info. etc. Ask the lawyer why. If you aren't comfortable then don't or ask him if you can give him an alternative like you DL#.

I've never heard of going to a lawyer to get a passport app, you can go to the post office to get one, I was in there today and saw a sign about it.

He does *not* need your SSN for his passport application.

Here is a link to a PDF of the actual passport app:
