I want to get my kitties an aquarium for Christmas. I saw one with a lid so they can't get to the fish. I just think they would enjoy watching them. Does anybody have cats and fish? Is it working out?

Cats just love to watch the fish swim. Just be careful to get one with a sturdy lid. Those lids have lights in them sometimes and they get warm. Cats like warm places. I once had a lid collapsel dumping the cat into the water. He sprang out, all wet, and none the worse for wear. It was funny, but made kind of a wet mess around.

As long as the cats can't get to your fish, I don't think there should be any problems. I've had aquariums and cats for years; my cats never even paid attention to the fish. But you know your cats' personalities better than anyone, so if you think they will enjoy it without trying to catch a quick snack, go for it. If you've never had an aquarium before, be aware that they are alot of work. You have to monitor pH and temperature (even for goldfish), and they still need cleaning even if you've got a great filter. If you choose to do it, I hope it works out and you and your cats enjoy it!

I did the same thing for my cats as a TV for them but you need to remember that the tank needs to be cleaned atleast once a month and I didn't have the time for it but I did it.
I had a bata and he lived for 4 years and I was very upset when he died cause when I would feed him he would dance and dance so I miss that.
Just make sure you want to do this and you have the time to take cause and clean it as its hard work.
If you get a bata don't put it in a small bowl as I thinks that's not right, put it in a small tank and there is ones with the hole lot together..e.g filter etc.
Good luck

I have thought about getting the cats an aquarium light show thing, kind of like those novelty light/lamps. that way I don't have to worry about cleaning the tank., or the cats eating the fish.

You need to get a Special Aqurium or a special thing for the Aqurium to go into that has a wood , posibly slideing, lid.

Otherwise the cats will open the lid to the Aqurium and once that paw hits the water your fish are guareenteed dead (it's what's on their paw,.. they don't have to touch the fish for them to die).

I have 3 cats, and I used to have a goldfish.
The cats liked to watch the fish swim, but they never bothered it. They would sit next to the bowl too.
It depends on you cat's behavior.
