well...it's a combination of causing your brain to produce and release more endorphins and seratonin---both brain chemicals which cause the feeling of "happiness", "euphoria", "pleasure", "bliss", "ecstasy"
as for how they work....you can't just take them and feel 'really happy' that day or right away....you have to take them on a consistant basis, and usually it just balances out your mood....while also making your generally more happy. i experienced a brief depression last year and took wellbutrin. i noticed results after about a month! once i felt better from the meds, and balanced my life out a little better (it gave me more confidence since i was feeling better about myself, and i was able to do better in school....i was depressed cause it was my first year in college and i was overwhelmed with work, and it was always nasty out---sunlight also produces seratonin) but once i felt better, i slowly weened off the meds (you have to take them consistantly, and you can't skip days or it causes your emotions to go out of whack, and you can't just abruptly stop or you will also throw your moods off balance) and now i'm happy and healthy without meds!
if you are depressed, talk to your doctor and definitely consider getting a psychologist or psychiatrist. i highly recommend a psychologist or "therapist" because they are not all about giving you a prescription, more someone to talk to. and if they think that meds might be a good idea, then see a psychiatrist or even your family doctor, and they can write you the prescription.

"Happy Pills" or better known by trade names such as Xanax, Prozac, Klonopin, etc work on the brain and central nervous system by depressing, magnifying, enhancing, pumping up, or simply blocking certain functions. The functions which are blocked, magnified, etc help to give the proscribed person a feeling of euphoria for a period of time, at least until their next dosage.
But beware, some pills such as Prozac, a powerful serotonin-re-uptake inhibitor can cause the person taking them to find themselve in the not so happy position of killing themselves.
Whic isn't so happy for the people left behind.

They're not happy pills. I think they umm balance the chemicals in your brain so its all balanced out. So the sadness won't be there anymore and you'll be fine not exactly happy but fine =)

Depends o what kind of happy pills you are talking about. They can rang from pills that effect your blood chemistry to ones,To pills, that effect your Hormones, estrogen, testosterone, or other body Chemicals. The Best thing to do is chat with Your Doctor......make a list of subjects to chat about then hold his or her feet to the fire until you get the answers, and you understand.

Basically, they increase the seretonin levels in your brain. They don't actually make you happy per se, they just stop you from feeling sad. HTH : )

I was suppose to take happy pills (harmone therapy) but I chose not to. My son also should take anti depressants, but we have found a natural product that has worked well for both of us.
