Today we picked up a new male border collie puppy. When we brought him home, he started growling softly at our 5-year-old female miniature schnauzer. He's quite shy at the moment, so this was rather startling. Our mini is social, but she was only sniffing him at the time. I realize he needs time, but can we speed it along at all? We really want this to work, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Well unfortunately you have already introduced the dogs the wrong way but there is still hope.

First off, you must not allow any growling. you must correct it immediately. The key is to show the dogs that you will not allow any aggressive behavior. The best way to do this is by using your hand to simulate a bite and essentially bite the aggressive dog on the neck. This is a dominance issue and you are showing dominance to the aggressor and letting it know that its not allowed in your pack.

It is also very important that you walk them every day in a structured walk where you lead the way. It is also very important that you make the two dog walk side by side not letting ether of them get ahead of the other. This is a physiological excesses which creates a balanced and equal pack with you as the alpha.

This does take some work and will take about 2-4 weeks to work out all of the aggressiveness.

do not pick up the new puppy to "protect" him. Let him learn he will be okay around the other dog, and don't say "it's okay" in a reasurring voice. If he growls tell him a firm "no", but don't act angry toward him. The more you let them interact together during normal activities, the better he will understand that this is how it's suppose to be!

READ THIS: http://www.leerburg.com/introducingdogs.htm

These dogs should have been introduced on neutral territory to avoid the established dog feeling it necessary to protect his grounds.

That site will explain the steps necessary to make this introduction successful. THERE IS NO QUICK WAY TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SHORT CUT THE INTRO!

One fight could change the temperment of either dog for the rest of their lives. Slow and steady wins the race.

Good luck!

Border Collies are one of the easiest breeds to adjust to new surroundings although his gentle growling was likely fear....too much happening all at once. He will be okay and they will adjust to each other just fine. Maybe he has been nipped by the other pups and wasjust giving this one a warning. I really wouldn't worry too much.

You need to work on socializing him. A good puppy kindergarten class would help. Here he will learn basic obedience but will also learn to socialize with other dogs and their owners. In the meantime don't leave your two dogs alone until you are sure they are past the awkward introductory period.
