Today morning when I tried to open my car from driver's side it did not open as the key was turning free. So I had to open it from the other side. Just now as I was examining the driver side lock the whole socket came out with the key, leaving an empty space. I am confused what to do and how to leave my car like this for the night (though it has a security system but sill). I have a 1993 VW jetta 4 door.

just be thankful that you weren't in your car at the time.

If you had your keys locked in your car recently, and someone tried to help using a slim Jim, this may be the price you paid for that help. If not, it still doesn't necessarily mean someone tried to break in. Most car thieves are good enough that your car would be gone it they wanted it. Locks do break, especially the newer cars with the plastic clips.

It is a fairly simple fix though, just take it in and have new door locks put on. They can set them so your existing key will work if you prefer, or issue you a new key.

Sounds like someone tried to force it with a screwdriver. You will need to get the lock cylinder replaced which requires removing the inner door panel for access. You will need to get the new cylinder rekeyed to your old locks, replace all the locks, or you will have a different key for that door.

the answer is an emphatic....YES.

i encourage you to use a steering wheel lock for tonight until you can come up with a more permanent solution. this acts more as a deterrent than actual theft prevention. if they think they cannot easily drive it away, they will be less likely to try to break into it.

Call a locksmith...They should be able to repair your Jetta, and ask him what his thoughts are on how it happened
