Scan Disk program keeps sutting down saying that a program is writting to the hard drive and needs to restart the SCAN DISK program. What does one need to do to be able to complete a SCAN DISK operation? Its an old compter that I use for solving long math programs and I need to cleanup the hard drive.

I found that scan disk on my 1st computer became very unstable towards the end of that computer's life. I had many problems after that. I believe it had something to do with the hard drive.

Since you're only doing maintenence, I suggest you get rid of all your unwanted files and programs and run defrag or defragmentation just to tidy up the space on the hard drive. Scan disk isn't really necessary to run. Unless you've just formatted the hard drive.

On my sons computer, He has 98, I have to click control alt delete, Then close EVERYTHING, even iexplore, which when the restart box comes up click cancel, your active desktop will close. By closeing everything slowly letting them all close. Scan disk runs fine on this computer.
