Can I be a Christian evolutionist? I believe in both Creation and Evolution.

Dear storm,

The question that you ask is at the heart of much controversy between Christians and non-Christians. In many cases it has also split the Christian community. Many Christians believe that it is their duty to "uphold" the Bible against those wicked evolutionists. However, your question goes much deeper than that. Your question hits right at the existence of God. That is why people of faith so staunchly support Creationism, while atheists vehemently support Evolution.

You say that you believe both, but I would submit that that is a bit of a cop out.

First let me say that it is evolution that must prove itself. If one believes in an all-powerful God, all of creation makes sense. I do not need to defend how God made the universe, or created life. All I need to do is to look up into the starry sky and say something like, "The heavens declare God's handiwork."

Evolutionists on the other hand must show how the universe all started (without God) and then how the Earth was formed. Next they must show how life began, and then show how all the species that we see today got here. Their answer to all this goes something like this. "Given enough time all is possible; and we have billions of years to work with." However billions of years is not enough time for all that is needed to support the theory to happen.

In addition, evolutionists need to be always explaining the new scientific facts that are emerging. It seems if they do not have an answer they ignore the question. For example the probability of forming basic proteins by chance from amino acids, is so small that a person that buys one ticket a week is more likely to win the lottery 100 weeks in a row. Evolution has yet to come up with an answer. They basically ignore this scientific fact.

Here is a second new scientific fact that evolutionists need to find the answer to. These are called "Polonium Halos". Without going into great detail there are trillions of these halos in every granite rock. They are caused by the breakdown of a radioactive element called Polonium. In order for the halos to be there, the original Polonium had to be in the rock as it hardened. Here is the problem for evolutionists. Polonium breaks down very quickly. Scientific fact says that the time taken to form all the granite in the world was formed in about 3 minutes. When confronted with this scientific truth , evolutionists say, “We will figure it out some day.”

Coal is a subject that evolutionists don't talk about too much. You see scientific fact says that it takes between 50 - 100 feet of raw vegetation to form 1 foot of coal. In West Virginia there are coal seams 50 feet thick. spreading over huge areas. This means that between 2500 and 5000ft (that is almost a mile) of vegetation were needed to produce the seam. Evolution says that these seams took millions of years to form. Here is the problem for evolution, in these seams there are hundreds of 50ft tall trees, all standing upright. How did they get there, and last millions of years without rotting. Evolution has no answer.

Storm, I have suggested only three problems with evolution.

You will hear scientists and many in the general public say that evolution is a fact. They may be right, however there are many, many facts that evolution cannot explain. Until it does, it is much more logical to me to be a Creationist. It actually takes a lot less faith.

I was recently reading about Dr Francis Collins. He is the head of a team that has mapped the human genome. In the article he made this statement, “...polls show that 40 percent of scientists believe in a God that answers prayer.”

In closing I would ask that you decide one way or the other. Recently I was given this quote: “People who follow the crowd usually get lost in it.”

God bless

Bryan

Absolutely Yes.

However, you will never be able to fit evolution into the book of Genesis.

For example:
Death entered the world as a result of sin.
Adam was the first man, and we inherited his sin nature.
Jesus (the second Adam) came to redeem us by being the perfect sacrifice.
If evolution is true, then death existed before Adam, and Jesus' death on the cross is of no effect.

If you don't believe me, then maybe an Athiest could convince you.

Look at this quote from "American Atheist" publication.

“Christianity has fought, still fights, and will fight science to the desperate end over evolution, because evolution destroys utterly and finally the very reason Jesus’ earthly life was supposedly made necessary. Destroy Adam and Eve and the original sin, and in the rubble you will find the sorry remains of the son of god. Take away the meaning of his death. If Jesus was not the redeemer that died for our sins, and this is what evolution means, then Christianity is nothing.”

– G. Richard Bozarth, The Meaning of Evolution, American Atheist, p. 30, Sept. 20, 1979.

I am not getting into the Cre and Evo discussion here, but wish to speak directly to your question can you still be a Christian.

Yes, you can be a Christian. Many Christians will enter Heaven with misguided ideas and false teachings. Lucky for you there is an all knowing God with a great mediator Jesus.

No. In the Bible it clearly states 6 days as the amount of time it took before man was created.

Remember to look at the context in Genesis - he creates the Sun and then refers to evening and morning as a day. This is not in the context of "a day is a thousand years" or anything similar. It is referring to literal days.

Also - for evolution to be true - it would mean that there was death in the Garden of Eden before the fall of man.

Christ wants you to believe that he loves you and makes you fit for his presence.

It's ok to say that re: the Universe and exact mechanism that was used by God, you're not sure. In fact to be a bit Agnostic, here, that God's ways are mysterious and we don't have all the answers because he chose not to give us a physics handbook, but the Bible instead.

Loving and believing in the claims of Christ is what makes you a Christian.

If you're maintaining the context of evolution being a tool of God in creation, then I think that's just fine...and let me tell you - you are not alone. Many Christian Colleges teach it just like that.

Yes if you answer the question...who started it all God or some magical process...big bang theory? Who made the gasses? In the end of all the evolutionists arguements we come back to...who made the beginning? They have no answer...we have God. Personally science has not proven their theory so don`t believe everything you read.

I believe so.
I believe in both, but I'm a Christian.

To clarify, it would depend on which evolution you believe in.
Some seem to think (and I imagine my thumbs-down came from those people) that evolution implies that we evolved from monkeys. Not necessarily.
The true definition of evolution is as follows:
1. any process of formation or growth; development: the evolution of a language; the evolution of the airplane.
2. a product of such development; something evolved: The exploration of space is the evolution of decades of research.
3. Biology. change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift.
4. a process of gradual, peaceful, progressive change or development, as in social or economic structure or institutions.
5. a motion incomplete in itself, but combining with coordinated motions to produce a single action, as in a machine.
6. a pattern formed by or as if by a series of movements: the evolutions of a figure skater.

When you put it that way, how can a person NOT believe in some evolution? Humans HAVE evolved! Not from apes, but from more primitive beings into more advanced beings. Honestly, what would Copernicus think of the advances we've made in science, medicine, and technology?
Three thousand years ago, the things that we've done would have seemed IMPOSSIBLE. Yet we've done them. How? By EVOLVING.

Silly humans. There IS evolution. But I only believe in that which is supported by scientific evidence. If there is not enough evidence for it, I don't believe in it.

I really dont think so...thats like saying that you hate the colour pink then wearing a pink dress. Its not possible, becuase both sides of the story are completely different to each other. If you read Genesis, it says that God created the world- we didnt evolve from apes!

No you cannot be divided between the two.

The Bible will not let you believe in evolution because it strictly teaches that God SPOKE everything into existence.

" By the Word of the Lord were the heavens created, and all the host by the breath of His mouth. For HE SPAKE AND IT WAS DONE; HE COMMANDED AND IT STOOD FAST". (psalm 33:9)

" And God SAID; 'Let ther be light, and it was so".
