You need to make a list of what characteristics you're looking for in a dog. Be very honest with yourself about it because you'll be living with this dog for years. Then sit down and do a lot of research on the internet until you find the breed(s) that fits your needs.

If you decide to buy from a breeder, you need to do even more research and choose very carefully; bad breeders can't promise you the health and temperment quality that good breeders can.

Mixed breeds are just as loving and deserving as purebreds but not as predictable, so if you're an inexperienced owner, I'd recommend an adult adopted from a shelter with staff that really get to know their animals.

The most important factor is probably the dog's energy level because if it doesn't match yours, you're going to drive each other crazy. High-energy dogs especially with low-energy owners are a recipe for disaster, since a dog with unspent energy will probably destroy your house, and likely develop behavioral problems like running away, barking, self-mutilations, etc.

Not an easy question!
How much space do you have?
What activity level do you want (super hyper hunting breeds?)
How much grooming do you want to do?
Does drool gross you out?
How much training experience do you have, can you handle a dominant breed?
Do you have kids?
What can your budget support?
What personality do you want?

I've worked with hundreds of dogs, of almost as many breeds my favorite is the Newfoundland, but most don't want one that size.

It all depends on you and your lifestyle but in my opinion a mini, toy or standard australian shepherd is a WONDERFUL breed. Here is a website on them:http://www.mascaonline.org/

it depends on where you live and your lifestyle and personality. go to a local animal shelter and they can fix you up with a dog with the right personality for you.
