I know not!! This boggles my mind!!
No one wants to touch it I think, because it has become out of control. How do you deal with the ones who are already here? What is the best way to keep illegals out? Is it cruel to "ship 'em back"? No one wants to take on this issue because they think they would look like the bad guy.
It is an issue for democrats as well as republicans. Anyone can sneak in and we would not have a clue. Granted, there have been many foiled attempts at terroism..and I am proud of that, but this is like ignoring the BIG pink elephant in the room!!

Answer? Many reasons. One,the illegal drug trade. Anyone who thinks that this government wants to wipe narcotics off the face of the earth have no clue about who's really piping it in.What would the feds and local law enforcement do with out all those billions of dollars per year spent on selective enforcement? Cant have civil forfeiture and a police state without a reason. Two, votes. The two parties sense that people are finally fed up with them and so they figure why not let a bunch of down trodden souls who are for the most part poorly educated run on across. Lets give them amnesty and the right to vote so we may save our jobs and our party. (and I mean party, singularly.) And of course,CHEAP LABOR. Jobs in meat packing plants in the mid west and south that used to pay 20 dph now only pay about 8 maybe 10. The deflating of our wages in America is an essential and crucial step in creating an American Union, north, south, and central. Then eventually a global government where personal freedom shall be a thing of the past. Tis unfortunate the things which fall by the wayside in the quest for global empire!

Because border security is related to immigration/illegal immigration, which is a very emotional subject that affects huge voting blocks, which impact the livelihoods of the politicians.

Excellent question, and I couldn't understand why it generated so much heat (wanting your country safe makes you a racist?). Here's what I really don't understand: Why can't the pols see that there are 2 distinct issues - (1) securing the borders, and (2) dealing with "guest workers". Sometimes I think they just don't want to.

It's All About The NAU, Zoe
It Has NOTHING To Do With The Voting Bloc
the BIG pink elephant ( See jamocha's Answer (Above))
Is ALOT BIGGER Than Anyone Can Imagine
The Bush Administration Is DEAD SET On Creating The NAU
Which Will Basically Erase Our Borders
And Destroy The Sovereignty Of The USA
And Step One Toward That Goal Is To Soften The Blow
Loosely Translated
BRAINWASH The American Public Into Believing
That OPEN BORDERS Are OK
And UNCHECKED Migration Is Acceptable
And That There Is NO SUCH THING As An ILLEGAL ALIEN
The ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION Crisis We Are Facing
Has A Much More Sinister End To It
Once The SOUTHERN Border Is An Open Border
The NORTHERN Border Is Next
That Said
If WE THE PEOPLE Can Express Our OPPOSITION
To An Open Southern Border
And REFUSE The Administration The Opportunity
To Grant Amnesty
And DEMAND That Our Border Be Secured
We Can Then OPPOSE The NAU
And The NAFTA Superhighway
IF The Amnesty Is Granted
And The Border Remains Open
We Will Have NO CHANCE
Of Ever Being A Free, Sovereign Nation Anymore
We Can BURN The Constitution
AND
The Bill Of Rights
The NAFTA Superhighway
Will Divide The Nation Into Two Parts
With INTERNATIONAL TROOPS (Canamexica Troops)
Guarding The 1/2 Mile Wide Stretch
That Will Run Through The Heart Of Our Nation
(Kinda Like The BORDER PATROL)
With A 12 Lane Highway
From Mexico To Canada
WE THE PEOPLE Must Stop This
Or We Will Not Be WE THE PEOPLE Anymore
At their meeting in Waco, Texas, at the end of March 2005,
U.S. President George W. Bush,
Mexican President Vicente Fox,
and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin
committed their governments
to a path of cooperation and joint action.
What is the plan?
Simple, erase the borders.
The plan is contained in a
"Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America"
little noticed when President Bush and President Fox created it
in March 2005:
In March 2005,
the leaders of Canada, Mexico, and the United States adopted
a Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP),
establishing ministerial-level working groups
to address key security and economic issues
facing North America and setting a short deadline
for reporting progress back to their governments.
President Bush described the significance of the SPP
as putting forward a common commitment
"to markets and democracy, freedom and trade,
and mutual prosperity and security."
The policy framework articulated by the three leaders
is a significant commitment
that will benefit from broad discussion and advice.
The Task Force is pleased to provide specific advice
on how the partnership can be pursued and realized.
To that end,
the Task Force proposes the creation by 2010
of a North American community
to enhance security, prosperity, and opportunity.
We propose a community based on the principle
affirmed in the March 2005 Joint Statement of the three leaders
that "our security and prosperity
are mutually dependent and complementary."
Its boundaries will be defined by a common external tariff
and an outer security perimeter
(OUTER Security Perimeter = No Borders)
within which the movement of people, products, and capital
will be legal, orderly and safe.
Its goal will be to guarantee
a free, secure, just, and prosperous North America.
http://www.rense.com/general71/nau.htm
The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway,
but an integrated North American Union--
complete with a currency, (Euro's Anyone ??)
(How About AMERO's)
a cross-national bureaucracy, (International Government)
(It'll Make United Nations Look Like Mayor McCheese)
and virtually borderless travel within the Union.
Like the European Union,
a North American Union would represent another step
toward the abolition of national sovereignty altogether.
Translated :
A Step Towards GLOBAL GOVERNMENT
NO US Constitution
NO United States
NO Bill Of Rights
NO US Citizens
A new resolution,
introduced by Representative Virgil Goode of Virginia,
expresses the sense of Congress
that the United States should not engage
in the construction of a NAFTA superhighway,
or enter into any agreement
that advances the concept of a North American Union.
I wholeheartedly support this legislation,
and predict that the superhighway
will become a sleeper issue in the 2008 election.
Any movement toward a North American Union
diminishes the ability of average Americans
to influence the laws under which they must live.
The SPP agreement, including the plan
for a major transnational superhighway through Texas,
is moving forward without congressional oversight--
and that is an outrage.
The administration needs a strong message from Congress
that the American people will not tolerate backroom deals
that threaten our sovereignty.
No wonder President Vincente Fox
called President Bush in a panic after the speech.
How could the President go back on his word to Mexico
by actually securing our border?
Not to worry, President Bush reassured President Fox.
The National Guard on the border were only temporary,
meant to last only as long until the public forgets about the issue,
as has always been the case in the past.
When you look at Crooked, Corrupt Globalists like
President Bush,
Vice President Cheney,
Donald Rumsfeld, - (One Down, Several To Go)
Condoleeza Rice,
Senator Frist,
Senator Kerry,
Senator Specter,
Senator Kennedy,
Senator McCain,
and others in Our Nation’s Capitol,
You’re looking at men and women
Performing a Frightening Experiment
on the United States of America.
You’re also looking at men and women
who have Failed to Stand Up for the U.S. Constitution.
They’ve Failed their Oath of Office.
They contrived us into an un-winnable war;
created a Horrific National Debt;
Outsourced, Insourced
and Offshored Jobs stolen from our middle class
And Opened our Borders to unending Illegal Immigration;
Instead of preserving our Rights as American Citizens.
Step ONE Of The Opposition Of The NAU ??
NO AMNESTY
DEPORT ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS
SECURE The Southern Border
Then And Only Then Will We Be Able To
OPPOSE The NAU
STOP The NAFTA Superhighway
And DEFEND The Sovereignty Of The United States
.

Because once a politician gets elected all his thoughts concentrate on his perks, his pension, his free health care, his travels paid by taxpayers, his million dollar lectures and all the free lunches and drinks he gets.
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

one of the many problems with the politicans is they think they know what is best for American, and they know that if they can keep the rest of us fighting among ourselves and hating each other. we will not have time to demand they do the jobs we pay they to do,it is all about money and power .
