Hi there, My dog is getting old and he seems to sleep much more then he did in his day. Also he seems to be drinking much more water then before and he pees a lot more as a result. Also he has lost a good amount of weight in the last few months. I believe these are al lot of the syntomes of Diabetes. Maybe its just what dogs do when they get old.. I dunno
What should I do?
Is there meds for dogs with Diabetes?
Should I change his diet? He currently has tinned food and gets some snacks off us from time to time.
Thanks

As he has lost weight, you are right, there must be some kind of medical problem. It could also be a kidney or liver problem as the symptoms are similar.
There are treatments for all these problems - depending on how far along the disease is.
The only way you are going to find out what the problem is and how much treatment will cost you is by taking him to a vet so they can do tests.
Regular insulin injections - if the problem is diabetes - will be an on going expense and the vet will help you decide whether the cost and discomfort to the dog is worth it.
Hope it all goes wel.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/ZPtKr

A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

Take the dog to the vet for testing for diabetes. The symptoms that you list are all signs of diabetes. If your dog does have diabetes he can be put on insulin. The vet will tell you about any change of diet and what snacks he can have.

of course dogs can get diabetes and the treatment is the same as in humans.....insulin. YOu cannot treat this at home without the help of a vet. Contact your vet for bloodwork and diabetic protocal if that is the medical issue

Sounds like your dog has diabetes! Take him to the vet ASAP. They can test his blood sugar there. If he's diabetic, they'll put him on a special diet. My diabetic dog was put on special formula Science Diet Dog Food for diabetic dogs.

You might have to give your dog insulin shots. You give him the shots the same place the vet gives rabies shots.

If you have a diabetes testing machine for humans, you can test your dog's blood at home (get blood from his ear) but I'd suggest you have the vet check for you to be on the safe side.

There's a yahoogroup for people with diabetic dogs and you can get more information there.

Why are you asking on here? Only your vet can tell you. If you are feeding high protein snacks you are helping to cause kidney failure. Older dogs need a low protein diet. Take the dog to your vet for a check up as you are otherwise at risk of being prosecuted by the RSPCA for neglect. It only takes one person to see your dog is thin and make a phone call for the RSPCA to be banging on your door.
