Actually, the best way is to do cultural immersion... You learn both the language and the customs and idioms of the culture at the same time. If that isn't possible, than I would start with a learning program that uses either the computer or tapes until you feel somewhat conversant in the language, and then enroll in an immersion class at a college. A lot also depends on whether you need to learn to read and write fluently in the language, or just speak it, and for what purpose...if recreational, that is a whole different level and becoming, say a translator...

The best way to learn Spanish is immersion indeed. There are different ways you could do that:
-move to Spain or Latin American (might be expensive)
-take some classes (always helpful as you have a teacher to ask questions too) and try to supplement your learning with other resources; watching Spanish TV, finding people to talk to in Spanish
-a lot of software right now are based on immersion. I found a site that ranks all the Spanish software for you http://learn-spanish-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. You can read all the reviews and ask for sample of the software you want to try. I have to agree with them on their number one choice. I tried the demo and it looks great

Rosetta Stone is the world's best way of learning a new language. It's usd by the CIA and other government organization. $330 will buy you only one language. It is expensive, but well worth it. I, myself, know so much about it because I sell the Spanish (Latin American) lanuage cds. They don't come with the manual or curriculum guide, but I have the links for those, which can be opened with adobe acrobat. I don't sell them for $330, either. They only cost $120. Less than half the retail price. If you're interested, or know someone who is, please contact me at bigj587@yahoo.com

I suggest dating a Spanish Speaking girl.
Personally, I'd date a Mexican girl thats how I learned. Worked like a charm.... You'd be amazed what you'll learn to try to impress or otherwise entice a beautiful woman.
Good Luck

The speed of oration in the media won't help you until your ears are attuned to the language.
The internet or books will teach you how to read and write, if you have good reading skills.
You need a teacher or fluent friend in order to learn to speak. Cds along with text will help.
I learned how to read and write Italian from library books. Had to go to night classes to speak.
