Occasionally, the braces can cut into the cheek skin, but this should be a temporary problem. It normally would be resolved itself in 1 week. That is why you are given the wax for about 1 week. If this problem remains, then you need to see your dentist or orthodontist.

Anything that can cushion the cheek from the sharp edges of the braces will work. Some of my patients said that they use sugarless gum and it works better for them.

Keep your mouth moist and drink a lot of warm water.

Avoid alcohol and alcohol-containing mouthwash (eg. Listerine)

Get dental wax from your dentist or drug store. This will protect your lips and cheek's.

Could there be just some of the wires that the orthodontist can snip that are causing the problem. I would go to the orthodontist and see what he can do.

you can afford braces? your family is well off then..maybe you should upgrade and go with the braces that are a clear plastic shell that molds to your teeth, then they wouldn't irritate and there is no metal to deal with...
