We have a 1997 double-wide trailer and I asked my parents could we paint my room for my christmas present. My dad said no. His reason was, he claims that you just can't paint over the walls. We have wall paper on it now and the walls are thin sheet rock. I was wondering if it can be done, and if anyone has done it will you tell me. I need as many answers as possible. Thanks.

I've owned and lived in more than one mobile, and yes the drywall is often thinner than in a house, but by 1997 they should have been using 1/2 inch.

The issue with many mobiles is that the wall covering is applied at the factory to the panels before they are installed, and are often like a contact paper. That's most evident with the fake paneling look.

I've painted walls in every room of every mobile I've ever owned and never had a problem with the "Paper" peeling or buckling due to painting. Beyond that I've applied thousands of gallons of paint in my time, over every conceivable surface.

With no offense to your father, his issue may be any negative possibilities that may happen, and the consequences, in having to actually repanel the entire room. You might ask if he would be willing to install thin Luan, smooth, 4 x 8 sheets, so that they can then be painted. You might also suggest helping. The install would actually be easy, and cleaner than installing new drywall or trying to remove the factory installed wall paper. The most you'll lose in floor space will be 1/2 inch in each direction, and the seams can have molding installed over, much like the molding installed over seams in a factory built.

Good luck.

Rev. Steven

Yes you can paint over wall paper, but it's awfully trailer-parkish.
If the papar is in good shape and not peeling at the seems it should be okay. I would recomend using a thick quality paint, maybe even an exterior. I would advise using a latex paint, the oil base can react w/ the wallpaper glue and it can peel.
The experinces I've had with wall paper is that when u want it off, it refuses. When u paint over it, off it comes. It would only take about 4 hours, a wallpaper scorer, and a bottle or two of diff to remove it all. No one likes wallpaper anymore, I hear so many people wanting to paint over it, I always advise against it. You still can do it. Me and my brother painted the dog when we were young, he was that color most of the summer.

It is possible to paint over wallpaper but I personally would not recommended it. Things to consider are: is the paper textured? seams and texture can be difficult to hide with paint. What is It made of? Wallpaper can be made from many different kinds of materials like pulp paper or vinyl. Primer should be used that is compatible with the material. Also, in the future removing the wallpaper can be much more difficult if it has layers of paint over it. I highly recommend that the paper should be stripped first then the drywall patched if necessary, and textured if desired, then primed and painted.

Yes you can paint over the walls.my husband and I have just remodeled our bathroom in a mobile home .First you have to put 2 coats of primer, caulk around all trim because cracks will show when you paint around each piece of trim. Then get a good quality paint a satin finish is pretty. You will have to put 2 coats of paint.it is a time consuming job,but I was like you tired of looking at that yucky wall paper. When you finish you will never know it was wallpaper.I hope this helps.Good luck with your room.

It can be done. Prime the walls with 2 coats of primer, i prefer Kilz 2. After the last coat driesyou should be good to go with the paint. I ve got a similar situation myself. Ithink that those walls are pretty ugly myself. Good Luck!

Yes you can, but maybe your Dad thinks it will look cheap. Some companies make a special type of paint for paneled/wallpaper sheets.
