Growing up, the people in my life were very spiritual and metaphysical. Concerned not so much with material things but with their connection to God, in all his many names. The older I get, the more I find myself attracted to successful people who are well-adjusted in today's society. People who are OK with the state of things, who go to Charlie Brown's with their families after an outing at the mall and are OK with that. Am I becoming a "bad" person–a shallow, lesser person? I'm so confused :/

I believe you are becoming a shallow person, but to say you are a lesser person for it? I don't think so. I don't think you're bad at all. This is what society in our age is like. We are so influenced by the media. It is constantly being drilled in our heads that we're supposed to want flashy things, that we're supposed to have the latest technology or fasion. That we should all want to live in those phat *** cribs the stars live in. What better way than to be attracted to peopl who are wealthy or well adjusted to todays standard of society? There's nothing wrong with being brainwashed like the rest of us.

I know how hard it is to distance yourself from the ones you are used to being with, in terms of having different beliefs than expected or different interests... I do not believe you are becoming bad at all just because of that, but that is something very much for you to decide. I had a very similar problem a few years ago, until I slowly started to meet people who shared my views. Now I have friends who support me and my beliefs, different from those of my family members, and I wouldn´t have a doubt that I am a nice person. Certain things are a matter of life style, and I believe you can still both have a strong connection to God and admire people who go to Charlie Brown.

That depends. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting to be around a certain type of people. Everyone wants to spend their time with people whose company they enjoy. If you're into material goods or whatever, fine. There's nothing wrong with that. What might make you a bad person is when you start mistreating other people. Don't let your wants lead you to unjustly treating others and you'll be fine. You don't have to be a saint to be a good person.

Don't let yourself confuse yourself though. If happiness is what you want from life, make sure you know what happiness means to you. Material objects and being with popular people (just for their sake of being popular) do not spell happiness themselves. But, if that's truely what makes you happy, go for it. I personally believe that happiness can come without material goods, hanging out with "successful" people (in the normal use of the word), or going to Charlie Brown's.

This is normal, and many people "must" have a taste of the world. In the end though, you must spit it out and realize it was just another dead end. I wouldn't call it being a bad person, but it is more likened to having a flat tire and watching all the other cars go by.
Remember, true success can't be seen with the eye, so watch out what you allow to seem to be attractive , because it will surely come back to bite your heel.

I was the same way when I was younger. We all want to feel connected to the real world in the best possible way and yet be spiritual. If your faith is well grounded know your doctrine enough so that you are not comprimising your basic faith you should be OK.

Romans 12:2 (King James Version) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

I didn't hear you say how you were doing spiritually, but from your question I can appreciate and share your concern. It seems that the world rubs off on us quicker than we rub off on them, O to be more like Jesus. I do think the Holy Spirit is gently giving you a little warning here. It is obvious that you love the Lord and we know He loves us. I would like to encourage you to read, Matthew chapter 25, ask yourself are you a profitable servant of God, and let the lord lead. God Bless you and keep you.

The parable of the sower

" Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold."

For me you sound like those seed who fell among thorns because "What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this age and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful."

No. You're just developing a taste for something you might not have experienced to the fullest extent as a child. If it were something else then yes you might have cause to be worried. But there's nothing wrong with success and I'm sure with your family background you won't let it go to your head.

You want to experience life on another plan and that is called growing. No you are not bad, you are gathering knowledge.
After all God provided the wherewithal for those things to be there, and since I believe in God, He began it by creating man.
