The usual signs are: he is kneeling in front of you, holding your hand and holding a big fat diamond on the other hand. That's a sign a that he is ready to propose.

Ok other signs are that he and you talk about the future in terms of how many kids you will have, where you will live, what kind of house you'll buy, etc. etc. And "you" means both of you. But even this is not a sure sign. Heck, even the one above is not a sure sign.

It is usually hard to tell. I would see if you two are doing everything a married couple practically does...and see if he has plans for children and a house with you etc...
Also if you REALLY want to know, start checking his pockets/wallet for reciepts. Make sure that there arent any dinners you dont remember for 2 and make sure that you are the only one around...also you might run into a Zale's reciept...thats a GOOD sign.
