My new employer asked me to take a oral drug test. Of course I complied. However, he did not ask if I was on any perscription medication and I am taking a perscription sleep aid. Will this show up in the results of the drug test? If the results do come back positive, what to I do then? I don't want to lose my job over a perscription sleep aid.

If you have a legitimate prescription, then don't worry about it. If you come up positive, you might have to go through a review board, but just take in your prescription bottle. Or have a sworn statement from your pharmacist ready in hand. However, if you do get terminated, and you have a legitimate prescription, I would contact a lawyer about wrongful termination.

First off ambien is not even close to a narcotic, nor is it a barbituate, so that should be fine for the test. Employers generally test for street drugs and narcotics. They don't generally test for steroids because the test is very expensive compared to the street drug test due to the multiple drugs and esthers available today. As for the legal issues of a positive test, I can't help you with that. Good luck.

Yes it will probably show up if you are using a narcotic sleep aid such as ambien. They may put you on suspension, but you just need a doctor's note explaining that you are taking a sleep aid.

A prescription sleep aid is nothing to worry about--they are testing for drugs like marijuana, cocaine, alcohol, etc. I don't think you have anything to worry about :)
