Many patients with mental illness have no visitors from family members.

A lot of times people are ashamed of admitting to anyone (even themselves) that they have a relative with a mental illness. Sometimes it makes them feel like they have failed the person, and sometimes it's just plain ignorance. They don't know what the illness is or consists of, or even how to treat it or give the needed support to their family memebers. Plus, there are all the stereotypes that come with mental illnesses, and that goes back to the shame.

Some people may feel embarassed to have family in that state. Others may think that the burden is over and they no longer have to care for them anymore since they are in some kind of home with people to take care of them. I used to work in a nursing home and took care of severe dimentia residents and they hardly ever got visits from family. The only time any of them had family come was during the holidays and even then most of them were lucky to see them. It's sad but sometimes true.

I also took care of a brother and sister who were in the nursing home because of a car accident, both were older, and the only family member they saw was their granddaughter until she became their power of attorney and then left! The only thing she wanted was their money and the power to get at their money. Its sad but I used to see it a lot!

The relatives might feel ashamed or sad because they cannot help the person with the illness. They might be afraid even, not knowing what the person will do next. It's wrong to think that!

Because I think that family members feel bad because there is nothing that they can do to help them get out of their condition. It is wrong though. I think that everyone needs a caring person in their life. Normal or Special.

They feel embarassed, which is a shame because family are supposed to be there for one another, no matter what the cause. I hate ignorant ppl. Period!
