Dogs are anesthetised put on monitors then prepped for surgery by shaving the area of the testicles in a male and the abdomen in case of a female. The males testicles are brought outside the body after making a small incision on the scrotum or just in front of it; once outside the body the cords are ligated (tied up) so the blood vessels sealed shut. Skin is closed up with sutures either external or buried under the skin or stapled. The females get an incision just Caudal) tailward from the naval and the uterus fallopian tube and ovaries are exteriorised and ligated above both ovaries one at a time then ligated just below the junction of the two horns of the uterus. Muscle wall is closed with absorbable sutures and skin is closed in one of three ways mentioned for males. The dog uterus is long and Y shaped unlike the human uterus which is more or less shaped like a grape fruit.

They put them to sleep, then after that, they take off the testicles if it is a boy being neutered, or make as small incision and take out the ovaries if it is a girl being spayed. Then they put a dressing on it and let them wake up in a kennel at the vets office.
They keep an eye on them so that they don't tear anything open
then when everything is fine and dandy, they send them home with you, sometimes the same day, sometimes the next.

When a dog is neutered (male) they either use a laser and burn the cords on the inside or they go in and cut the cords going in the the nut sack. For a female (spay) they basically give them a hysterectomy.OUCH!

When a vet spays a female dog they remove the ovaries from the dog.
When they neuter a male dog they remove the testicles.
Both serve the purpose of removing the dog’s ability and desire to reproduce.

they take out there parts. The take the testicles out of boys. sometimes they have started simply clipping them like a vasectomy and actually leaving the testicles in place. And a spay fro a female is just like a hystorectomy on women. not sure if they just remove the ovaries of more though. they fix it so they can't have puppies and removing the ovaries and testicles remove the source of the hormones that cause the dominance behaviors and the sex drive. as well as aggression in some animals

When they spay a female, they actually do a hysterectomy on her(remove her overies and uterus),and neutering a male consists of removing their testicles
