Whether or not there is a god is another discussion, but one of the key aspects that sets humans apart from all other species is that we are the only beings that are aware of our own impending death. This disturbing knowledge is responsible for the beliefs in an afterlife and a higher power(s) that span almost every culture on earth. Humans are a very emotionally weak species and many of us need the reinforcement that comes along with religion.
