They float unless your jar is packed full!

They tend to float once the top layer has been removed. Only when they are fresh will they sink in vinegar! It is the length of time they're in the liquid that makes most shop bought pickles float!

HEre's my ans......I make pickled cucumbers and onions in oil and vinegar.....they both float. Vinegar will sink only.

well they should be tightly packed in the jar, so have NO option to do either!
make your own.. they are far far better!
