I have an idea that has worked great for me! Instead of trying to memorize 1000s of words with brute force, try learning the roots. That way you can guess the meaning of an unknown word about 90% of the time. For instance: Bicycle - bi means two (binary, biennial, etc) Anniversary - an means year. This way, you can learn 1000s of word by learning a few dozen latin and greek roots.

Read a lot more, doesn't have to be books. Could be magazines for computer games, internet articles or newspaper articles. Also get yourself those vocabulary builder books. I have those and its very useful, especially when talking to others.

read, read, read...and crossword puzzles. read something you are unfamiliar with and keep a dictionary near by. try to use the words you don't know the next day or in the coming days.
