by the spoonful it cod liver oil tastes so bad. I was looking for other ways to take it because I dont want to take the gel caplets.

Strong fishy flavors have been a long standing problem with fish oils. Partial hydrogenation was found to be a partial answer. Some partially hydrogenated fish oils exhibit reversion, i.e. the fish odor returns. So I guess you will have to develop a taste for cod liver oil, or you may freeze a teaspoon of the oil and then swallow it before it melts.

No, you won't get the benefits. I recommend drinking it in a shake with fruit. That's how I take mine. Also, there are some brands that are flavored with things like lemon or orange. The flavoring doesn't make the oil taste great, but it doesn't taste bad either.
