Kathryn, you don't say how old you are, but if you are any younger than 20 I would make sure you get a second or even a third opinion on this.
Why? While bipolar disorder is a VERY serious mental illness, right now it is being (IMHO) seriously overdiagnosed, just like ADHD was ten or 15 years ago. More to the point, there is debate in the psychiatric world about whether it even exists in children/young adults, and even if it does, the diagnosis is very hard.
Bipolar is very real, and the medications are effective but you really, really do not want to have to take them: they are for life, and the side effects can be very bad.

Bipolar disorder is basically a mental health issue where your mood can abruptly change from day to day, or even moment to moment is some cases. It sounds like you may have it, but then again, you also might just be a moody teenager, since hormones can also be responsible for mood swings. However, if it was severe enough for you to be in a mental health center, you probably do have it. Don't worry- it's very manageable with anti-depressants, and I'm sure your doctors will help you out.

Bipolar and unipolar can both produce mood swings. The difference is that bipolar is characterized by mania and depression. Whereas, unipolar is only by depression.
Chances are you'll probably be given medication. If that's the case you may want to check out my resource.

PLEASE!! I can't stress this enough! Bi-polar is complete nonsense. So are all the other diagnoses. Psychiatry is a business. Plain and simple.... that's all it is.
They brainwashed my family into thinking that I have bipolar disorder.... my mom would get my dad to punch me and then they would call the police and have me thrown into a mental hospital.
GET PSYCHIATRISTS OUT OF YOUR LIFE!!!
Don't believe what they tell you.
Only you can work out your problems. Only you can learn to control your emotions. Pills are harmful. EXTREMELY!!!!!

If that's what your doctor thinks your diagnosis is bi-polar, then it more than likely is. They seem to know, but there are some tests and bloodwork and stuff they can do to check for sure and see if you have a chemical imbalance. I wish you the best of luck, because sometimes it is hard to deal with. I hope all works out well for you.
