The idea is to humble yourself in his eyes. Remember the only thing that makes us not like the god in the old testament is the fact that Adam and Eve didn't eat from the tree of life. Humans have to convince themselves that god is so far above them that we can never catch up or he gets all pissy thinking we think we're equal and he reigns all this nasty stuff upon us. Read the book that was written by plain old men that promise it's the word of god and see what this caring and loving deity did to people who were "non believers" or thought they were his equal.

Maybe he doesn't. Maybe that is just some peoples interpretation of what they think God wants/needs. Personally, I dont think thats true of God.
