Wow! you are getting close to a controversy.

While the 10 commandments include a respect for your father and mother, some of the religions in the Bible days, and in the underdeveloped countries today carried the respect for elders too far; they landed up worshiping their elders, even their dead elders. Some folks who do Genealogy almost worship their ancestors.

Now back to "father and mother" the wedding vows of the Bible make a point about leaving your father and mother and becoming one soul.

Now back to respect: We should respect, or at least offer a modicum of respect for both the old and the young.

I respect only elders who have earned my respect for their behavior.

"Respect your elders" has been used as a catch phrase for abusing children. I know, because it has happened to me. And, I have seen 1st hand evidence how religious cults, like the Menonites use "respect your elders" to ruin their children.

Now, do you see why I think respecting elders is not a slam dunk automatic thing to do.

Remember, you did ask us what I think about "respecting elders" as a part of my religion.

Do you hate me for my answer? I am sorry, but I think honesty is sometimes more important than cordiality.

I respect my elders regardless of a religion, I have learned an incredible amount from my elders and in part I think they learn from us, yes there are times I get frustrated with elderly people since I live in Florida the snowbirds can drive you nuts but on the whole I am thankful!

As long as those elders have earned respect. An elder who beats, abuses, rapes, or molests is NOT worthy of respect. That's why I have a hard time with the generalized phrase, "Respect your elders." Do you know how many little girls (and boys I suppose) have been molested because they were raised to do what they were told by an adult and to respect that adult no matter what?

Respecting elders is not at all related to the religion.. In each and every religion they gave the message to love eachother and to respect elders. Sothis is different from what you are thinking.

Showing respect is a virtue. I think it should be practiced by everyone - religious or not. At my church, they teach the virtues to children, so I suppose it's part of our religion. But really - it's just a part of life.
