You will need antibiotic, Advil, and heat. The heat applied to the tooth will kill the a significant amount of bacteria. This is like having the milk pasteurized. When the milk is heated up to about 65 degree Celcius ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/pasteurizat... ), most of the harmful bacteria are destroyed.

I recommeded heat application for 30 minutes (5 minutes on and 5 minutes off). Then rest for several hours. You may repeat the heat application 4 times a day.

NO ICE!

Call your dentist for the abtibiotic prescription.

Anything that you would do without the help of a dentist would be temporary relief. For now you can rinse with warm salt water and take something over the counter for pain. I would get to a dentist as soon as you can because you will not know what the problem is until it is x-rayed. An exam and xray shouldnt be more than $80-100. Then you can decide what you wanna do after that. At least the doctor will be able to get you out of your discomfort a little better until you have made a decision. Good Luck!!

No cold compresses. Use a cup of hot water, as hot as you can stand it, with a teaspoon of salt stirred in. Rinse the area you are getting the pain from as best you can, and then spit out the water. Visit the dentist as soon as you can.
the_shannon is also correct, pain can also be caused by sensitivity, in which case a toothpaste for sensitive teeth will help.

Depends on the reason for the pain. Some pain is from an open cavity, in which case, rinse with warm salt water, put a topical oral anesthetic into the cavity, and stuff it with cotton.

But sometimes, the pain comes from something that is not open, and the gases in the infected or necrotic [dying] tissue press against a nerve, and hot stuff causes the gases to expand and press more against the nerve and there is more pain, and in that case, you should use ice against the part to shrink the gas, reduce the pressure, and hence relieve the pain.

And dentist.

I agree with Anbesol. Maybe tylenol or another pain reliever. Best thing to do is see a dentist as soon as you can to see if there is a problem, the longer you wait the worse it could get. If it is just sensitivity or something minor Sensodine toothpaste might also help.
