I have a Dolly Barham or Berhm in my family tree, who according to the 1901 census was born in Weymouth Dorset in 1891, but I cannot locate her birth details anywhere!!! So I am thinking maybe Dolly was a nickname? I think she was originally Berhm and anglicised it to Barham which also doesn't help!

Dorothea or variations were pretty common back then.

Dorothy was usually a nickname .

happy hunting.

I don't know where Weymouth Dorset is - sounds England to me.. If the census is a US census then be sure to check the records at Ellis Island its a good data base for immigrants since most of them came that way from Europe.

On the West Coast there was Angel Island, but they do not have an archive like Ellis does

good luck

It could just be an unrelated nickname (Dolly was a bit glamorous namewise in the Victorian era), in which case you're going to have problems. But I have Great Aunts on both sides of the family - one a Dorothy, the other a Dorothea - and they're both shortened to Dolly. And considering the size of my family (my grandfather had 76 cousins - Methodists!), that's been very convenient, as I've at least remembered their names! You could try Dora or similar, but as far as I'm aware Dolly is nothing more than a Dorothean nickname.

Good luck tracking things down.

Dolly was short for Dorothy or Dorothea, However it may have been short for her middle name, it was common for many people to go by their middle name instead of their Christian name, I suggest that you check your ancestors between the both of you for names that crop up on a regular occurrence.

"Dolly" could be anyone from Annabelle to Zelda, especially if she was cute as a child. It is like "Butch" for a boy.
