They didn't have surnames in his culture at that time. People were identified with their father's name, which in Jesus' case he would be called Jesus bar-Joseph...meaning Jesus, son of Joseph. Or they were associated with the place the were from, such as paul was known as Paul of Tarsus. Another way to distinguish people, because Jesus was a common name, so was Mary, but they would identify what they did, or who they were as a person. Jesus was the Messiah, the anointed One, the Christ....so he was called Jesus the Christ. He was also called the Nazarene.

most likely either "son of Joseph" or "of Nazareth". Christ is a title, not a name, but i guess the other two are really just titles too. they didn't have last names in the same sense that we do today.

Surnames did not really become customary until the late 1400's/early 1500's so he had none. Usually people were denoted by where their residence was hence he was called Jesus of Nazareth.

That's not the only reason.People back then did not have last names.

Technically it was whatever Joseph and Mary's was but it has become Christ because he is Christ which means Messiah.
