Hiya! Well, let me first commend you for being very sensitive and respectufl about this topic. As mentioned above I believe the verse is reffering to misguided Jews. Remember only 20% of Muslims are Arabs; the rest of the 80% tend to be marginalized, despite being the majority. Ironic, eh? Anyway, you can be a perfectly good Muslim without knowing Arabic. I for one do not speak it but I am learning and have taken classes to, at least, read and write. The main benefit I see from this is that I feel like *I* can interpret the Quran myself, without the slight bias that is inevitable with any English translation. Usually, if I am weary of someone's "ruling" or interpretation of Islam I go straight to the source. Then I read about 5 copies of the translation of that verse. Then I look up the Arabic root words in the ayat (verse), THEN I read different contextual interpretations, then I make my mind up. I refuse to idly follow. Of course if the content at hand is not controversial, but merely along the lines of "do good deeds" then there is no need to go into extensive research of the translation (it is pretty straightforward). Also, we have hadiths in Islam (well, 99% of Muslims at least) which are accounts of the prophet's actions written down by his companions. These accoutns, while not direct sources of religion or law, provide moral lessons and examples which we try to emulate (as the prophet had almost a perfect character). I hope that makes sense, and even if you don't become Muslim it's still a good idea to understand this all! It's quite complex. PEACE.
