The concept is a balance of good and evil. It is taught that one should have a balance of both. Too much or not enough of either will cause a person to lose their harmony. The Ying Yang is the ultimate symbol of PERFECT balance and harmony.

Yin translates to "shady side of the hill" whereas Yang translates to "sunny side of the hill". Yin is traditionally thought of as darkness, the moon, cold, and female, whereas yang is though of as light, the sun, hot, and male. There are also organs of the body and foods that correspond with the Yin and Yang. It is all about balancing the hot foods with the cold foods, etc.

Yang is the bright, active, "male" principle. Yin is the dark, passive, "female" principle. It is believed that one should try to have a balance of both. Having too much of one is not desireable.

It represents the balance between the positive force and the negative force. And yes, most humans have gone too far one way or another. Only those who've mastered their emotions are totally balanced.
