Police officers need to know all about makes and models of cars, trucks, and SUVs.

Sometimes, officers will only get a glimpse of a suspect vehicle and need to accurately communicate make, model, type, etc. over the air to other officers.

Additionally, if they get a radio call to look out for a particular make, model, etc., they need to have an image of that vehicle in their mind.

This is harder and harder to do these days because so many vehicles look similar -- but, this is an absolutely crucial area of knowledge to be successful as a street cop.

I knew virtually nothing about cars when I got hired. They don't care if you do because it is something you will learn as you go. When you deal with vehicles on a daily basis, you quickly learn to recognize a Pontiac sunfire from a Plymouth neon etc...

If you want to learn about the rules of the road I suggest you find a local "Highway Traffic Act" (that's what we call it in Ontario). It wouldn't hurt to know the rules of the road (don't worry about section numbers you are not required to memorize them just to know how to find them).

bullets can go though car doors, but not engine blocks. Also the tires can stop a bullet.

You need to try and learn to tell what model and make a car is by looking at it. If you are on the look out for a ford focus, you need to know what to look for.

Car & Driver would be a good place to start.
This is a good website:

mrg5150 is right, you have to be able to identify vehicles with sometimes just a glimpse. Also, when you run a plate, better be sure that the license on the car returns to the correct year, make & model.

Automobiles are cover, not protection. The automobile of today likely will not stop a bullet.
