What causes it is a condition known as TMJ syndrome--the treatment for it usually starts with a mouth guard you wear while you sleep to prevent teeth grinding. Other treatments may include pain medications, physical therapy, etc..
you can make an appt with your dentist to discuss your problem and options available--they may send you to an oral surgeon.
One suspected cause of TMJ is stress. You can learn more about it from the internet, library, etc.. Good Luck!

7 years ago I've been involved in a car wreck and even since suffered with severe on and off facial and jaw pain. I've tried almost everything western medicine had to offer and had visited countless of specialist, had done ct scans, and therapies but to no avail. The doctors I have been to had persisted that there wasn't anything wrong with me and that almost drove me crazy as I was going through hell from this condition. According to all my symptoms I was diagnosed by a holistic doctor as having TMJ and he had recommended this book to me. After following the recommendation in the book for several weeks, it had changed my life. I got immediate relief after following the unique set of exercises in the book and after 2 weeks the jaw and face pain had completely gone. I only wish I would have ordered this program years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain and anguish.

Remove your teeth and you will stop grinding!
I just couldn't help it.
If you are noticing a problem have a professional one made that is custom to your teeth. Their designed to protect your teeth as well as they position your jaw as to minimize the force you put on the joint itself. The drug store is a quick temporary fix, not a long term solution.

I grind my teeth when I am asleep also. Sometimes I wake up with my jaw clamped shut and biting down really hard. My dentist says that stress can make you do that and told me of certian shields you can get-but these have allready been explained in previous answers.I really should get one now.

Visit your dentist for a bite guard as soon as you can. Its possible to develop joint problems later in life if left untreated. Causes can be anything from stress, dreaming, or just general habit. I've ground my teeth in my sleep for years.

You can get a night guard made for you at the dentist or you can buy a cheaper one at the store.
