I'm sure it is illegal to use bass for bait in California. I'm guessing that it is OK to use sunfish like bluegill. This is the case in every state I have fished in (and that is a lot!). Good luck with your fishing.

I don't know about California, but it's illegal to use bass as bait, in Kansas. Sunfish(bluegill) are ok, but bass is against the law.

Not sure of California but Alabma you can not use a game fish as bait.How ever the use of a sunfish(bream) under 2 inch can be used.

I suggest that you check the local regulations or call a tackle shop in the area they will know what baits you can use

If your laws are similar to Indiana's then you can use gamefish as bait as long as they were caught in a legal manner and are of legal size.
