Ever since I was young my parents would say that if you drink milk while you have a cold or a stuffy/runny nose that it's bad for your cold. is it true? Cause I find that when I drink milk when I have a cold/ allergies all the mucus comes out easier.

So is this a myth or something? Is it true that milk makes the cold worse, if so, how come?

Milk has proteins in it that contribute to the formation of larger quantities of mucus. However, if you're dehydrated, the fluid in milk will still help thin the mucus out so that it will expectorate (come out) with less effort. It's not that milk makes the cold worse, it just causes more mucus in a time when you probably already have too much.

If you have a cold it's better to drink something like gingerale or 7-Up. It cuts thru the mucous better. It's sharper. Milk tends to thicken the mucous. You need lots of fluids with a cold. Even cold water would be better than orange juice.
