My Cousins best friend who was 19 at the time had two dogs and the rescue helicopter said for her to leave the dogs and she stood her ground and they let her and her dogs on ......because if that ever go in the news that they abandoned a 19 year old that would look so bad ........People should always protect the helpless and personally i think that the selfish people who left their pets should suffer the same punishment.......If it were me i would never leave with out my pet NEVER ....how could you sleep at night
Why even get a pet if you are not going to at least guarantee it safety and good health..................My wife and I helped to rescue 11 dogs of Katrina and find loving homes for the innocent helpless traumatized dogs

The guys that left their dogs behind will get a surprise when they find out God has been spelled backwards all these years.

You sound like a very nice, but very judgemental man...you have NO idea how hard it must have been for those people who simply could not take their pets to safety!! Yes, I imagine they do lose sleep and a lot of it, worrying about those poor things that they loved being UNAVOIDABLY abandoned. You need to quit patting yourself on the back, although you are doing a fine thing in adopting pets, and rethink your superior attitude. Just because the people who rescued your "cousin's best friend" graciously allowed her to take her dogs on the helicopter is NO assurance whatsoever that every rescuer would allow that, and I am sure she was a very lucky, rare occurence. and i am through.....

You should be ashamed of yourself. How dare you judge the people that were in that situation. Unless and until you are in that situation how dare you judge another human being. I am an avid animal lover, I have dedicated a good part of my life to animals. But when faced with an impossible situation like that, I would always choose my own life and that of my human family. As much as it would break my heart and no, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. But I would have far more regret if I found out that another human life was lost because I wasted precious time and space for my pet. As far as you rescuing those animals, that was a very kind and nobel act. Your attitude about it sucks and kind of takes away from the goodness of what you are doing. Shame on you!

I dont know about jail but yea they should be punished. I think they deserve what ever the states penalty is for animal neglect. Not more than that because some of the people only had 1 chance to get saved. But yea the ones who left early and didnt take thier animals should never be able to get another 1.

And the rescue people who told them to leave the animals should get the same thing.

That question is hard to answer. Alot of people were not allowed to take their pets. Some pet owners did the best they could before leaving their pets like putting them on the second story of their houses and left alot of food and water....at least they tried. But some pet owners left pets chained outside to dog houses who subsequently drowned. I personally could not leave my pets and would refuse to leave unless I could take them. If they couldn't go I would stay with them. I think the pet owners who showed a total lack of care should receive some sort of punishment.

im a pet lover and all, but some times you have to decide between your life and your pets. Some people have no excuse. But some have no choice. Let's say the last bus ride out of New Orleans said no pets allowed, but Katrina was coming fast and you had no other way out. You just pray your pet can find a place to live and can have a happy life. But some have no excuse and will have that burden for the rest of their lives.

the people doing the rescuing only had human lives in mind. how can you possibly think of punishing them they were risking there own lives to save those people. the helicopters only have so much fuel on board and so much space on them. so them hanging around for some selfish women refusing to get in the helicopter probably held up some other human life being saved. going against what a lot of idiots think a dog is just a dog and not human, and in a life and death situation they should be treated like that. you cant blame the women for wanting to save her dog but you can be blamed for writing such selfish rubbish.

I have worked in dasters. There are times you can not save the pets. I have gone back in after the people as been taken care of to help pets that had to be left behind. In the wild fires we put ourselfs at risk to pull out pets of all kinds, even one very large boa, which by the way none of the man would touch. We rounded up horses and cows and pigs. When you are trying to save your childern the pets do not count.

Ithink the STATE government should have gone to jail for their negligence, and the owners of the gas stations for jacking prices so high that some people couldn't afford to get away.

No, I wouldn't have left my dogs, I'd have taken my chances. But, seeing how bad things were, I would have bloody well WALKED out of there if that is what it took, and I'd have started early enough that it would have made a difference.

Wait a minute... I wouldn't have lived in a costal area that was below bloody sea level to begin with! Ok, maybe that is a bit harsh... but come ON! Reality check, people!

i imagine your going slightly overboard. enable me ask you this... In an emergency like that and also you in common words have room for you, your spouse and toddlers and they say there is no extra room on your pets. Now who may be left in the back of? may you leave your toddlers for the pets? So, come on and be sensible about the problem. convinced, i'm a puppy lover also, yet when it comes right down to both them or my kinfolk, nicely the pets can might want to watch for the subsequent help that comes alongside. i visit replace a puppy plenty extra accessible then i visit replace a chum. So, a minimum of be lifelike about their problem. Do you quite imagine they had to leave their pets in the back of? Come on. some one isn't questioning precise. And convinced, I wager the human beings of Katrina did not opt to leave them both. you're sort to assist out the pets tho. yet you may want to imagine of the sacrfice they have been threw.
