I have a 16 month old preemie who has just starting accepting a sippie (maybe a month or so) cup. She will drink juice, pedialite, and water OK, but no milk. Milk has to be in a bottle. Any suggestions?

We are in constant contact with her pediatrician due to being a preemie and she says not to rush things...that she will do things in her own time due to her corrected age. I've also tried feeding her first, then giving her milk last to try to get her thirsty. She still won't take milk in a sippie. I hear that this is a common problem with weaning off of the bottle??

Milk is thicker then the other fluids she will drink out of the sippie. She is just telling you that she isn't getting enough fast enough.

I never gave my son anything else in a sip until he drank milk regularly out of it. Obviously it's too late for that, but you can only offer her water and milk in the sip from here on out until she accepts it. Also you can try rice milk which is drastically different than real milk in texture and taste and gradually add more and more real milk to the rice milk in the sip. As long as you stick to your guns she will give in. My friend had this same problem and the child is now Three years old and still on the bottle! It's horrible, you should see that kids teeth, not to mention the awful looks we get when we're out with her. My son on the other hand was on the sip by the time he was11 months old. I hope this helps.

My middle child would not take her milk from a traditional sippy cup, we found a softer spout cup by Nuby, it is the same material as a bottle nipple but in a sippy cup shape, she transitioned to the Nuby cup for a few weeks while we weened her off the bottle...I found the Nuby cups at Walmart, Target, & Babies r Us...hope that helps.

Have you tried those cups that are like sippy cups, but they actually do leak when turned upside down? My son liked those for awhile. Theres also sippy cups that look like bottles, or even get a cup that has a straw in it. If she doesnt like anything, just give her time. My son wasnt off his bottle until he was about 2 years old.

part of it is that she knows that milk does NOT come i a sippie cup.....you could try mixing the milk with water and slowly make it more and more watery and less milky and then in the water in the sippie cup, slowly start mixing in milk? Or another thing that you could try is a straw....takes them a little to get it but once they do, it's a convenient way to go...

At walmart they have "Nuby" silicone-top sippie cups. Its a GREAT transition from bottle to cup. Theyre usually in the bin under the sippy cups. Let her take her time. She'll adjust. Good luck!

don't give up milk in a sipper, if that was my kids all they would see is milker in a sipper. I think she's just picky.Don't worry about the preemie part she'll catch up in 6 months
