my friend was telling me about this she did it to her freind and she said that it left a "burn" mark on her hand and hurt really bad? is this true and how does it work?

Your friend had frostbite. What happens is the salt lowers the freezing point of water that allows the water to pull more energy out of the ice, that is the water is colder then freezing, that allows the heat from your skin to flow toward the water faster, lowering the temperature of your skin below the freezing point and you wind up with frost bite. Plain ice will do the same thing only it takes a long time.

Salt intensifies the freezing effect of ice. Look at ice cream salt.

Yes it's going to, however please recognize... it is not the combo burning your hand. You have located your hand at the web site of a chemical response. The salt reacts with the ice to soften it speedily.. your hand is simply feeling the response.

it actually don't burn the salt melts the ice ,making it colder , if you do it for an extended period of time it can cause frostbite

the salt makes the temp of the ice lower causing frostbite.!!!!!!

I am not sure, But I think because salt melt the Ice so faster. And Ice need more temp to melt and make hand so cold. Nerves have same reaction for burning and cold and we fill same pain.

y would you do that ? If it hurts don't do it. Oh and my friend told me that it is really neat to jump off a bridge into frigid waters I can't swim but my friend said its neat so im going to try it.
