When you first see you puppy, home from somewhere, do not get excited and pick hmi up and play with him, do not even akknowledge his presence, wait for him to calm down then great him whe you are ready, have him sit and pet him and tell him he is a good dog. It takes a lot of time with puppies, because everyone wants to be excited when they see a puppy, and the puppy thinks he need to be excited too. Also excercise is great for puppies at least once a day.

The best way to train a puppy is to have him in a crate. If you need a short break from him, return him to his crate. If he cries a lot, grab an old t-shirt that you have worn for two days so it has your scent on it. Dogs need to learn what is expected of them. I think puppies are more work than babies but once they grow into dogs, you WILL miss the puppy stage. Make sure you are giving the puppy enough play time outside. Good luck with your puppy!

Your dog will naturaly calm down as he gets older but to help you now I suggest that you do the following:

Don't talk to your dog or interact with your dog at all for twenty minutes when first walking into the room. Say nothing and make no eye contact. When the puppy comes near you move him away with your hand but say nothing. After twenty minutes let him come to you and praise him. The puppy will eventually get the message that he has to be calm. Do this everytime you walk into the room. This method works.

Make sure he's getting enough exercise on his walks and when you let him outside. What breed is he? Some breeds are just naturally excitable and crazy, and there's really nothing you can do about it. Lavender oil can help calm animals and humans; maybe you could look into a small bottle and try it out.

I used aromatherapy. Lavender is a natural calmer. So, I put a few drops of lavender (you can find it at just about any store) on a blanket and put it in their beds. It worked like a charm. It calmed down my two Yorkies when they were pups. I use it now some.

Take him to puppy training classes to socialize him and learn how to control unwanted behavior. PetSmart stores offer basic obedience classes for very reasonable prices. It's a good way to start socializing your dog and to take the beginning steps at relating in a healthy way to your Pet. GL with your pup.
