I don't know. I'm a Roman Catholic who attends Church with my Baptist wife, and I will tell you I have never met a group of better people. They are friendly, outgoing, warm, compassionate, and genuinely welcoming.
They are a little concerned about me - not having had that "believer's baptism" and all, but it has never been a problem between us.
I do know that some Baptists are virulently anti-Catholic, but most of it stems from a lack of understanding Catholic teachings and tradition. Some Protestants feel the Catholics have "perverted" the Gospel, and all that stuff with "Saints" and "Mary" makes them uncomfortable.
Fear is the natural reaction to ignorance, and people who are afraid aren't generally very friendly.

I am neither, I am a Sabbatarian. As too your question 'Why can't we love.....' It is because that the Protestants (at least in the beginning) were rebelling against the malignancy and despotism of the Catholic system of worship. And they saw (rightly) that the pope is the Beast of Rev 14 and Dan 7 & 8. And that the Catholic church (not nessisarily the pople) is the whore of Rev 17 & 19. Most do not any longer remember why they do not like the Catholics, but some of do know why we do not like their church.

I think it's because there's too much prejudice and misunderstanding... One of those reasons we need a 'World Religions' class. If Catholics and Protestants had an unbiased understanding of each others' beliefs, I truly think there would be less hostility. I, too, pray for the day when Catholics and Protestants might worship together in peaceand brotherhood. Let us be the change we wish to see in the world.

We can in Jesus' world. And I can in my heart. If someone else can in his or her heart, then we have fellowship with one another.
When you think about it, though, how did Protestantism start? It started by people protesting against the Catholic church. So it's basically 2 religious groups that have opposed one another ever since the uprising of Protestanism.
Jesus said those who worship the Father will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. The Holy Spirit isn't protesting anyone or opposing anyone - ever.
EDIT: Except, perhaps, the proud. The scripture says that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

alot of protestant churches don't take time to understand the catholic church and the teachings and from lack of knowledge they create fear and spread it among themselves. the see a statue of blessed mary and have been taught it is idolatry, they don't take time to see that the statue is perfectly fine and all the catholic church teaches is 100% biblical. this isn't true of everyone ofcourse. alot of people who where raised catholic but became disenchanted and turn to protestant religions also tend to have the other members of the church teach them why the catholic church is so wrong. i have many protestant friends and wish the best for all, i think it is best to encourage understanding and tolerance, we have alot in common as christians and so we should focus on these aspects and seek understanding, this is the christian way to do things whether catholic, baptist, methodist etc...

i dunno. I know for the Irish there has always been hostility between the two. The Catholic side was basically tortured and singled out just like you were. I don't know why there is so much hate. I think we should be united and if were going to fight, fight against other religions

That’s a good question. When Christians aren’t busy waging wars on non-believers, then they wage them on people of different faiths. When they take their break from that, they start waging wars on each other. Then they wonder why Christianity is declining in the free world. Hmm?

We are of the same family and belief in Jesus Christ. I agree, that in this age human pride is the only thing separating the Body of Christ.
I pray for unity.
Merry Christmas and God Bless you for asking the question.

Because religion is a business. The Catholic church and the Baptist church are competors. Each church has to claim to be more valid than the others else people would support coming and they'd lose their support.

I visited a Catholic church and they had communion. They wouldn't let me partake of communion. I wasn't good enough. Funny thing was, I was a pastor in a local church at the time. I would never step foot in a Catholic Church if it were the last place to worship on earth.
