The earth does to through cycles of warming and cooling; however, now the earth is getting warmer than it has in the past. Normally it would be cooling again by now, but it keeps getting warmer. Changing proportions of gases in the atmosphere are contributing to this. This is not debated in the scientific community, but unfortunately is debated in the media.
Humans ARE releasing copious amounts of some of these gases, such as carbon dioxide. In the past, much of this carbon has been in solid forms on the earth, such as oil or vegetation (which is also able to capture additional carbon from the air to make sugars). These are called carbon sinks. Burning oil and deforestation are releasing this carbon into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. The carbon sinks are being turned into carbon sources-- sources for atmospheric carbon dioxide.
So what can we do to change this?? Decrease our carbon sources and increase the carbon sinks. So burning less oil and building back up the forests (and halting deforestation) would bring the atmospheric carbon back into solid forms in the earth. Lower atmospheric values of carbon dioxide occur during the cooler parts of the earth's cycling, indicating that this could stop the warming that is occurring.
Needless to say, oil and forest resources are big drivers of the economy, which is likely the source of a lot of controversy over global warming. A balance needs to be reached that will in the long term be best for everyone.

The Earth's climate goes through cycles. We don't understand all of the causes or reasons for the way things are. Meteorologists have a difficult enough time figuring day to day weather. No one understands what drives the climate, although we are learning more and about the sun, ocean currents and upper layers of atmosphere.
There have been fluctuations for as long as the planet has existed.

We need to do much more study to understand what could drive the changes.

you cant, its a natural process, its something the earth goes through all the time, we have to get used to it. not try to get the earth to get used to us that wont work
12,000 yrs ago the earth reached the apex of its last ice age, sence then the earth has slowly been warming. there have been micro ice ages, 1820-25. the 1930's were warmer on average then this decade has been.
SO REMEMBER - just as the earth has cycles of day and night, winter and summer. it has ice ages and warm ages. we are in a warm age. get used to it. many factors could be at play, volcanism, a warm time for the sun, or posibly fasol fual burning
OHH AND be thankful you werent alive 650 MILLION yrs ago, the earth was the hottest it has ever been with more deserts then has ever been. due to great volcanic activity
THE THING WE NEED TO BE FOCUSED ON is the reduction of destruction of wild habitats and eco-systems, why, the earth is a living organism. eco-system, forests, rivers, wetlands, rainforests act to clean the earth. if we continue to destroy these vital lands then the earth just keeps getting dirtier. i hope i answered you question adaquetly

We could use up all the oil and coal in the world, and the rest of the fossil fuels, and then we'll have nothing more to generate excess CO2 with, and levels will return to normal and then so will temperatures. Hey, we're already doing that! We probably have about 33 years of oil left at TODAY's rate of use, and that's a silly assumption given the boom in China's fossil fuel usage.

WELL INDEED WE CAN! one thing is to cut down on using gasoline powered cars. i know its a lot to ask, but try. unplug any electronic devices when you are not using them. eat more vegetables and less meat and dairy, humans put gases into the air that contribute to the greenhouse effect. global warming is going to kill us all if we don't do something. the ice bergs are slowly melting and soon enough all the extra water will drown us all. just listen to what al gore has to say, and follow these tips.
