It does sound extreme, until you read the rest of the story. I'm a mental health professional who works with teens/pre-teens and their parents and I see this kind of behavior frequently. Mother has raised an out-of-control child. He has been in trouble at school as well as at home. Mom is so desperate to get compliance from him that she hopes to scare him straight with an arrest. (It won't work, by the way - it's already too late for them...whether or not it was justifiable is moot).
It's sad to watch parents struggle like this. She may have been an abusive or neglectful mother, or she just may have made a lot of parenting mistakes. People need a license to cut hair or grow flowers or drive a car, but anyone can be a parent with absolutely no training.

No. When I read another article from CNN, it stated that the child had ADHD and I hardly think this is going to help him "stop acting out" or "teach him a lesson". Maybe the lovely mother should actually try to learn ways to help her child instead of involving police in what should have been a family matter. There's a reason why he's acting out and calling the cops isn't going to help.

Technically, he was stealing. The gift had not been given to him yet. She may have wanted to return the gift, because if was too expensivve and his behavior was undeserving of such a gift. If he opened it the store may not take it back. She may have wanted to give the gift to someone else. He must have gotten on her last nerve. He apparently felt comfortable enough to open it. He has no respect for others property and we don't know the other countless things he may be doing just to be rebellious. I think we only see a small portion of their story. I bet he will think twice before he does it again!

That is the most stupid thing that I have ever heard about a parent doing. Even if he is a trouble maker what the hell is this going to mean to him? He will most likely resent his mother and grandmother for a long time and probably think they don't love him, which is not the way to get a child to behave. Now she is going to have to waste her time and her own money because of her own stupidity.

Why are you asking on here?
The people on Yahoo! Answers believe in feeding a Two Month Old Cereal, controling toddlers weight because they are gaining weight, beating children until they just KNOW magically what they hell you want them to do or admit or know or whatever, and trying to convince people that their child is absolutely possessed by the Devil or Satan when they snap under this insanity.
As for the Article,.. MAYBE she was actting like it was a Gift for someone else. Maybe she was trying to treat the gift as if someone gave it to her to give to someone else or it was for someone else. People are idiots,... she could have tried to kill him and then told the police he broke into the house and stole it... I'm more use to that kind of stuff happening to kids that don't really do anything,.. people just use them as escape goats or whatever because they aren't "normal".
Added: Phoenix: People do stuff like that all the time AND GET AWAY WITH IT!
Added2: [ My Short Answer: No! Not unless that is intended for another person. People need to Shut Up with the LD meaning a child is the spawn of Satan,.. it means they are Labled and used as an Escape Goat and they are Gullible. I even get the feeling she pre-planned the events of the evening to get rid of the kid,... she probably hid it before the police got there to get them into as much trouble as posible. People do this. ADHD does not mean Criminal or Violent,.. it means you have problems with your Attention Span,.. when you are ADHD it's posible to hear someone yell something about opening a gift and then rushing off to open that gift because you didn't catch the part about NOT opening it,... it's also not helpful if someone isn't in the same room.]

well if it's true that he's been acting out at home and at school (the police report states that at 12yrs old he got expelled from school) and nothing else has worked, then maybe this will work as a scared straight tactic. better to try to stop the behavior now than to let it get worse and we have to support him as an adult in prison. besides the child needs to learn to respect the adults in his life.

I don't really get why the police charged him though. I can see her point a little, as it sounds like the kid is out of control. It's really a sad case of a child having a child, and the poor parenting that results.

Wow that is crazy. Why not just send him to a boot camp to get him to straighten up, or better yet parent him so he does not become a trouble maker.
