I have been asked to re-activate when I have made big changes in my system, like adding 2 new drives and a new graphics card. After installing these items and re-booting, XP does not recognize the same computer that it last booted into, so it asks you to re-activate with the new system configuration. It will de-activate the previous install so you can't run the same XP disc on 2 computers or use bootleg discs. This is their way of combating software piracy.

This activation nonsense is the reason I changed to Linux. It's your computer, so why should Microsoft tell you when you can or can't use it? Also, why should they make you pay again for an operating system you've already paid for (which happens a lot because of errors in the WGA system)?

Microsoft had to back down on the new Vista EULA on exactly this point - reactivation after hardware upgrade - because of thousands of complaints from PC enthusiasts who enjoy upgrading and re-engineering their PCs.

The "add new hardware" re-activation block has very little effect on Windows XP piracy, which on a global scale is running at around 35% of machines. If Microsoft respected Windows users a little more, and priced Windows a bit lower, then this percentage would be far lower than it is. If you crush and bully your customers, they will respond with piracy and contempt, which is exactly what has happened.

Go figure, Microsoft.

Have you changed a major component (RAM alone wouldn't do it) like the motherboard?
