What are the ramifications of adhering to traditional standards of marriage-ie-one man -one woman under God-and how do you legislate and facilitate what God has clearly stated-aren't spiritual rites under the authority of the clerical governing body? Is it the cash and goods and family involved that crosses the judicial and governmental lines? Since a spiritual relationship is just that-spiritual-how can you legislate it's tenets? (Unless it is physically harming the participants or the general public or breaking laws created for the health and well being of the populace))

Okay, let's assume that only Christians are allowed to marry. Let's assume that Christians are the only ones to have weddings. IF that was the case, then there would be no need for civil laws regarding marriage.

However, we have several different faiths and points of view about marraige. So, we need a neutral voice ( the law ) to decide who gets what. If we didn't we'd kill each other in the name of our own Gods. Best wishes.

Marriage is a government institution as much as it can be a religious one. No one is saying that even if the law becomes marriage for all regardless of sexuality, that any church has to marry a couple. People only want to be married by those who wish to do it and respect them. Because of this, there will always be places for Judges and Justices of the Peace.

I thought we already had... You can't marry in the church if you go against the teachings of the Bible and the State doesn't go along with those ideas. In the church you can't marry a non believer. You must be in good standing with the Lord (no unconfessed sin). Yeap I guess thinking about it I was right we already have withdrawn from the states definition of marriage... Jim

If a church I attended were to decide to alter God's word to accept homosexuality as natural and okay, I would leave that church as they would be teaching apostacy. By the same token, though, if my church were to persecute homosexuals because of the lifestyle they lead...I would still have to leave. Again they would be teaching against the teachings of Christ. I only have to accept the person....not their sins or their lifestyle.I will not condone any sin no matter how small, sin is sin. If I condoned sin from others I would have to set my belief aside and say it is okay for me to sin. In which case I would probably hurt someone.

There are churches that do that. It is quite legal for a gay couple to marry contrary to popular belief. It just is not recognized by the law.

What they are really pushing for is that the law and everyone else to be forced to accept it.

you answered your own question, "Since a spiritual relationship is just that-spiritual-how can you legislate it's tenets?"
Since it is a personal spiritual relatinoship, no one should have the right to say who and who can't get married, even the churches
